Its warming up to be a cosy Christmas this year, and we’ve been taking a look at the films and TV shows showing on our screens this festive period. From Roald Dahl adaptations to Christmas specials of our favourite shows, Filming in England presents a festive watchlist of films and TV shows that are not just entertaining… but have all filmed in England too!

His Dark Materials Series 3 

The dark, whimsical fantasy series based on Phillip Pullman’s children’s books returns for the much-anticipated series 3 this winter.

Released on BBC as a boxset on Sunday 18th December

Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special

Have you got your dancing shoes? Strictly Come Dancing’s Christmas Special is back again, filmed at the fantastic Elstree Studios!

Airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Christmas Day at 5.10pm

Aladdin (2019)

Looking for a fun film for the whole family? Look no further than Disney’s 2019 adaptation of Aladdin, which filmed at Longcross Studios in Surrey.

Doc Martin Christmas Special

Famously filmed in Port Isaac in Cornwall, Doc Martin will be sadly waving farewell with a Christmas Special premiering on Christmas Day.

The Witcher: Blood Origin

The Witcher: Blood Origin is the highly anticipated prequel to fantasy series The Witcher, both of which filmed in some remarkable English landscapes, including Surrey, Yorkshire and Cumbria.

Matilda the Musical

In case you missed it in the cinema, the spectacular adaptation of the Matilda stage show is arriving on Netflix this Christmas Day!

Death in Paradise Christmas Special

The Death in Paradise team are bringing us a festive special, filmed in the beautiful paradise that is Cornwall. What’s more, you don’t have long to wait for its twelfth series, which begins on 6th January 2023.

The BFG (2016)

In case Matilda has left you in the mood for more Roald Dahl adaptations, Steven Spielberg’s The BFG is showing on BBC One this festive period. It filmed in some magical locations, including Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.

Dodger Christmas Special

Following the antics of Dickens’ Artful Dodger, Dodger is back and bringing us a Christmas special this year. It filmed in some great spots across the South West, so keep your eyes peeled for some familiar places.

A film which ponders what would happen if The Beatles had never formed, Danny Boyle’s 2019 Yesterday showcases some beautiful locations from Suffolk and Norfolk.
