Since its explosive debut in 1996, Tom Cruise’s iconic Mission: Impossible franchise has been thrilling audiences worldwide with its high-octane stunts and set pieces. This week, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning arrived in theatres (the eighth film in the saga), and like any great action film… the locations play a central role.
Having become a huge advocate for the UK as a film and TV destination in recent years – and being the recent recipient of the BFI Fellowship award for outstanding contribution to film and TV culture – Tom Cruise and the team arrived in some world-class filming spots across the English regions for this shoot.
Filming in England supported The Final Reckoning team on their hunt for the perfect locations by helping with multiple nationwide location briefs, working with Location Managers David Campbell-Bell and Dan Whitty and Location Scout Akshay Desai.
Joely Ellis, Production Liaison Manager for the East & South East, comments:
“We were thrilled to contribute on the final instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise. We worked closely with the locations team and supported their search for an incredible, diverse range of locations.
These included an underwater tank, transmission station, subterranean command centre, the interior of the Russian Embassy, power plants, rocky mountains and hill tops, large warehouses and more. The English regions provide a wealth of visually striking locations that translate beautifully to the big screen.”

Middleton Mine in The Peak District, Derbyshire
The Peak District played a key role in Dead Reckoning – Part One, being the location for the film’s epic final set piece – featuring a train carriage being dangled off a steep ridge above a quarry (you can watch it in our showreel here).
For The Final Reckoning, a climactic tunnel sequence was filmed near underground quarry site Middleton Mine. We spoke to Derbyshire County Council about the shoot:

Historic Chatham Dockyard, Kent
The Historic Dockyard Chatham is a maritime museum on a former Royal Navy Dockyard in Kent, it covers 80 acres of land and maintains over 100 historic buildings. The Mission: Impossible team filmed on the Dockyard in 2022 with support from Kent Film Office and Medway Council.
We spoke to Gabrielle Lindemann, Film Officer at Kent Film Office about their experience facilitating the shoot:
“The Kent Film Office team were delighted to welcome Mission Impossible and worked closely with the production team to connect them to the right people and ensure that filming across the county remains as seamless as possible.
Being a unique and very film friendly location, the Historic Chatham Dockyard is a fantastic offering for large, ambitious productions like Mission Impossible – and we’re delighted that Kent will star in the eighth instalment of this iconic franchise.
We were also very grateful for the support Medway Council offered the production to make Chatham an even more attractive destination for the industry.
We can’t wait to see everyone’s hard work pay off on the big screen!”

Longcross Studios, Surrey
A popular offering in the South East’s phenomenal studio and build space landscape, Longcross Studios is built on the site of a former military factory in Surrey and offers 4 main stages and a huge 200-acre backlot. The studio’s previous credits include Doctor Strange, Skyfall, Guardians of the Galaxy, World War Z and Captain Phillips.
For The Final Reckoning, the team filmed underwater scenes in the studio’s impressive water tanks.

RAF Bicester Aerodrome, Oxfordshire
In September 2024, Tom Cruise was spotted shooting aerial stunts in Bicester, Oxfordshire. Keep your eyes out for RAF Bicester Aerodrome in the scene where Cruise’s Ethan Hunt flies two planes at the same time (watch it in the trailer here)!
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is in cinemas now.
