What’s been filming in England? July – September 2022

As we near towards Autumn, we’re reflecting on what has been a busy summer for film and high-end TV production. From cult film prequels to Broadway adaptations and real-life crime dramas, crews have been busy working on some extraordinary productions.
Discover what’s been filming in England (outside of London) during July – September this year…
North West
Sexy Beast – Paramount +
Where? Liverpool
Filming for Paramount’s prequel series to the 2000 film Sexy Beast has been underway in Liverpool this summer. Its set in 90s East London, so expect to see Liverpool transported in time and place!
Entitled – Two Brothers Pictures/Channel 4
Where? Manchester
A new comedy is on its way starring Fleabag and Stranger Things’ Brett Gelman, who plays an American trying to reach a common ground with his late wife’s estranged family in the English countryside.
Significant Other – Quay Street Productions/ITVX
Where? Manchester
Yet another series keeping Manchester busy this year, Significant Other is adapted from the award-winning Israeli series of the same name.
The Bay Series 4 – Tall Story Pictures/ITV
Where? Lancashire
ITV’s murder mystery thriller is back for its fourth season, seeing the cast back in their coastal town of Morecambe.
Midlands
Great Expectations – FX Productions/BBC
Where? Shropshire
The latest adaptation of Dickens’ Great Expectations is gearing up to be something special. With Peaky Blinder’s creator Steven Knight writing, the six-part series stars Olivia Coleman and is executive produced by Tom Hardy and Ridley Scott.

Champion – Balloon Entertainment/New Pictures/BBC
Where? Birmingham
Award-winning writer of Queenie, Candice Carty-Williams, is applying her skills to screen by creating a new original drama. Set in South London, Champion will explore fame, rap and family.
South West
Beyond Paradise – Britbox/BBC Studios
Where? Cornwall
This upcoming spin off to Death in Paradise picks up the original drama’s storyline as the characters navigate their new lives. Whilst Death in Paradise famously filmed the Guadeloupe Islands, Beyond Paradise will use Cornwall as its picturesque backdrop.
Black Cake – Harpo Films/Hulu
Where? Somerset
Hulu are adapting Charmaine Wilkerson’s family drama meets murder mystery novel, Black Cake. The story spans across decades and continents and is being filmed in part in Somerset.
Dodger Series 2 – BBC/Universal International Studios
Where? Bristol
Following the escapades of Oliver Twist’s The Artful Dodger, Season 2 of Dodger has been filming in Bristol this summer.
East
Mickey7 Adaptation – Plan B Entertainment/ Warner Bros. Studios
Where? Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, Hertfordshire
It’s been announced that Parasite director Bong Joon-Ho’s latest film is shooting at Warner Bros. Leavesden! Starring Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette, Naomi Ackie and Steven Yeun, the film itself remains untitled but is inspired by Edward Ashton’s Mickey7.
Wicked – Universal Pictures/ Mark Platt Productions
Where? Sky Studios Elstree
The Witches of Oz are arriving on the big screen in a two-part feature film adaptation which has been 10 years in the making! Filming at the fantastic Sky Studios Elstree, Wicked is expected in 2024.
South East
Heart of Stone – Skydance Media/Netflix
Where? Shepperton Studios
Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan are teaming up for a spy thriller Heart of Stone, which filmed in Shepperton Studios this August.
Red White & Royal Blue – Netflix
Where? Kent
Adapted from Casey McQuinston’s bestselling novel Red, White & Royal Blue, we’re expecting fantastic things from this upcoming Netflix series starring Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine.
Dreamland – Sky/Merman
Where? Margate, Kent
Singer-songwriter Lily Allen is starring in her first TV acting role in Dreamland, a comedy following four sisters in Margate. Staying true to its plot, the series filmed in Margate itself this summer!
Black Mirror Series 6 – Broke and Bones/ Netflix
Where? East Sussex
After a 3 year wait, we can’t wait to see what the Black Mirror team have up their sleeve for the sixth season of the iconic dystopian series.
Yorkshire
North East
The Old Oak – Sixteen Films
Where? County Durham
Ken Loach’s third feature film to shoot in the North East, The Old Oak, has been filming in County Durham across the summer. Centred around a pub in a once thriving community, the film follows a Syrian migrant living in a close-knit mining village.
Vera Series 12 – ITV Studios
Where? Northumberland
The iconic Detective Vera Stanhope, played by Brenda Blethyn, is returning for the twellfth series of Vera – which continues to film in Northumberland.
The Dumping Ground Series 10 – BBC
Where? Hookergate School, Gateshead
Tracy Beaker’s back again for a tenth series of The Dumping Ground, which set up camp in Gateshead.
Yorkshire
Bonus Track – Erebus Pictures
Where? Yorkshire
Bonus Track is an exciting new independent feature film funded by Screen Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Content Fund which wrapped in September this year.
Malpractice – World Productions/ITV
Where? Leeds and Bradford
An all-new medical drama is on its way from the makers of Line of Duty! The series has been filming in Leeds this summer and is expected to be a suspenseful watch.
