Dorset’s breathtaking coastline is making waves on the global stage, thanks to the psychological thriller The Woman in Cabin 10. Now streaming on Netflix, the production filmed key sequences at Portland Port and Weymouth Bay, showcasing the county’s cinematic potential and stunning coastal landscapes.
Based on Ruth Ware’s bestselling novel, The Woman in Cabin 10 follows travel journalist Lo Blacklock [KEIRA KNIGHTLEY] aboard a luxury yacht, where a chilling mystery unfolds. After witnessing a passenger being thrown overboard, Lo is told no one is missing. Her search for the truth puts her life in danger, creating a tense and atmospheric story – amplified by Dorset’s striking backdrop.
Filming took place at Portland Port and Weymouth Bay, with the superyacht Savannah providing the setting for much of the action. These locations offered the perfect combination of privacy, scale, and visual impact, making Dorset an ideal choice for the production.

Dorset Council’s Film Facilitation
Dorset Council provided practical assistance throughout the production, including location coordination and advice on permissions and connecting the crew with local suppliers and accommodation. Dorset Council also facilitated a partnership with Weymouth College, enabling students from Creative Media and Film Studies courses to gain hands-on experience.
This collaboration gave students valuable insight into the screen industry while helping the production access enthusiastic local talent. In total, seven locally based crew members and 25 supporting artists were employed, contributing directly to Dorset’s creative economy.
Adam Badrawy, Unit Production Manager, shared his experience working with Dorset Council:
“It was a real pleasure filming ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ in Dorset, particularly during our time on the super yacht at Portland Harbour. The support from Dorset Council’s Film Dorset made the process incredibly smooth — from location coordination to helping us connect with local crew and accommodation options. The introductions to candidates from the Weymouth College collaboration were a real highlight — both production PAs we worked with were excellent, and I’ve since gone on to employ one again on a later project. It was great to see such capable local talent coming through. Overall, it was a very positive experience, and we’d be delighted to film in Dorset again in future.”
Filming in England National Crew Directory
Creative England’s Filming in England team are the National Screen Agency endorsed by DCMS and funded by the BFI to provide comprehensive production support to Feature Film and High-End TV Drama shooting on location in the English Regions.
The National Crew Directory connects productions with regional talent across all skill levels and backgrounds. With over 7,000 listings, from trainees to above-the-line crew, the dedicated crewing team offers a free, bespoke crewing service for all production types and genres, strengthening relationships and expanding opportunities in the regions
Samantha Gillie, National Crew & Facilities Manager at Creative England further expands on supporting regional crew:
“One of the most rewarding parts of our regional crewing service is seeing the impact it has on both sides. Hiring locally isn’t just practical – productions get to know and trust the local talent pool, and crew – whether they’re just starting out or have years of experience – gain opportunities to work, grow their network and skill up. Every job filled locally ultimately helps build a stronger and more sustainable screen sector; one that brings genuine economic benefits to the community, and creates long-term career pathways that keep talent rooted in the area. It’s one of the simplest, most powerful ways we can support growth and open doors.”

Key Filming Location: Portland Port
Portland Port in Dorset was a primary location used by The Woman in Cabin 10 to film on location in the county. Ian McQuade, Portland Port Commercial General Manager shares the positive experience hosting the production:
“Portland Port was pleased to support the production of ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’. The port has hosted film and TV productions in the past but this was the first of this scale for some time, with up to 250 people on site, including actors and crew. This created a real lift around the port and in the community, with actors and crew spotted around the area and in terms of commercial benefits for the local supply chain and economy.”
The film and TV industry is a powerful driver of economic growth, bringing tangible benefits to regions across England. Filming provides a direct boost to local businesses from hotels, restaurants, transport services, and suppliers all benefiting when a production sets up in their area. Productions also create job opportunities for local crew, inspire tourism, and contribute to long-term infrastructure investment, helping to build a thriving screen sector across the regions.
Cllr Richard Biggs, Dorset Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Property & Assets and Economic Growth, further added his delight at seeing the Dorset landscape showcased on screen:
“We’re delighted to see Dorset’s landscapes featured in such a high-profile production. Collaborations like this not only showcase the county’s stunning locations but also create real opportunities for local talent and businesses. Seeing local students and crew gain experience on a Netflix production is exactly the kind of outcome we want to achieve.”
Kerry Carpenter, Marketing & PR Coordinator at Film Dorset who facilitates filming enquiries and permissions for Dorset Council, added:
“Having the support from Creative England’s Filming in England team and working with the production on ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ demonstrates how Dorset can deliver a rewarding filming experience. From supporting with permissions to connecting crews with local suppliers and emerging talent, this project highlights the value of collaboration and the benefits of choosing Dorset as a film-friendly destination.”
