From the mind of Birmingham’s Steven Knight, House of Guinness is one of Netflix’s biggest new series – with early promos teasing a story which mixes the drama of Succession with the grit of Knight’s own Peaky Blinders.
Although the story is set in the streets and mansions of 19th-century Dublin and New York, filming took place across North West England. The Locations Department, led by Senior Location Manager Dan Connolly, scouted filming spots in Greater Manchester, Yorkshire and Liverpool – from St Philips Church in Salford all the way up to Broughton Hall Estate, Skipton.
The Filming in England team were on hand to facilitate filming during production, assisting with location enquiries and connecting the team with local authority partners. Chelsea Foster, Production Liaison Manager for the North West & Midlands recollects fondly:
“It was a real pleasure to support the House of Guinness Locations team across the North West. With no shortage of Dublin and New York doubles in this part of England, working with our filming partners, we were able to facilitate filming at several key locations. It was a privilege to contribute to bringing the team’s vision to life and to help provide a striking backdrop for a pivotal chapter in the Guinness family’s story.”

Space Studios Manchester
Part of the Filming in England Partnership, Space Studios Manchester is a purpose build facility for high-end TV, film and commercial productions with past credits that include Peaky Blinders, The Crown and Brassic. The studios hosted some filming for the House of Guinness production.

St Philips Chapel Street, Salford
This Grade II listed Anglican parish church in the heart of Salford, Greater Manchester, was the perfect double for 19th century streets for the series.
To gain more insight into how this historic building was transformed, we spoke to Rev’d Dr Gareth Robinson, the Rector and Team Leader at Saint Philips Chapel:
“The crew worked so hard to create an authentic-looking 19th century scene, both inside and outside the church. So much high-tech kit behind the scenes, and yet you’d never know from what was on camera. We loved watching the ‘snow’ fall as the sun shone down and imagined what life might have been like when our church first opened 200 years ago in 1825.”
The team at Salford City Council also provided support to the production during their time at St Philips. Sally Cook, Culture Programme Manager, reflected on Salford’s endeavours to welcome this and other productions to the area:
“We’re eagerly anticipating the release of House of Guinness, particularly as some scenes were filmed right here in Salford. St Philips [is] a stunning backdrop and a brilliant example of one of the rich and varied locations our city has to offer. Salford continues to prove itself as a dynamic and inspiring setting for world-class productions. Its increasing popularity is a great reflection of our commitment to championing creativity and showcasing Salford as a premier destination for film and TV.”

Tatton Park, Cheshire
A stunning historic estate surrounded by 1,000 acres of parkland, Tatton Park has so much to offer productions! With a grand mansion, working farm and further 50 acres of garden on site, the location has attracted the likes of Sherwood, A Gentleman in Moscow and Peaky Blinders.
Charlene Clarke, Events Manager at Tatton Park shared on her experience of hosting the House of Guinness team:
“Tatton Park was proud to host the cast and crew of House of Guiness within the historic Mansion House – specifically the Library. Working closely with our curatorial team, the production crew carefully removed select furniture and installed a full-size carpet to prepare the space for filming.
The transformation led by the Art Department was nothing short of remarkable. Their ability to adapt the room for cinematic purposes while preserving its historical integrity is a testament to their skill and respect for heritage.
We’re especially grateful for the crew’s professionalism and care. Every member was respectful of the collection and surroundings, ensuring the Library remained protected throughout the process.”

National Waterways Museum Ellesmere Port, Cheshire
The National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port is a historic dock on the Shropshire Union Canal in Cheshire and part of the Canal & River Trust, the UK’s largest canal charity. The museum is home to the most comprehensive collection of boats, artefacts and archive from the nation’s canals and rivers.
Filming took place there in October and December of 2024, where areas of the museum site were transformed into 19th century graving docks in Dublin and the toll house became ‘The Angel’ pub complete with Guinness signage. We spoke to Museum Visitor Services Manager, Chris Done, who told us:
“We were excited to work with the crew on House of Guinness, the museum is a fantastic site that lends itself perfectly to filming. The National Waterways Museum provides historic backdrops for all kinds of productions as well as parking and behind the scenes facilities like green rooms and a café. We’re always happy to accommodate film crews at Ellesmere Port.”
Filming & Campaigns Manager, Cassie Clarke said:
“This was the largest film shoot at the museum since Peaky Blinders in 2014. We started discussions with LM Dan Connolly in February 2024 and filming wrapped here in December. The museum has many listed buildings and collection items that must be treated with extra special care, the filming couldn’t have happened without support of our museum experts, heritage team and loyal volunteers.”

Little Underbank, Stockport
In July 2024, the Underbank area of Stockport was redesigned to become a 19th century Dublin Street for House of Guinness. Stockport itself is fast becoming a popular filming destination with Inside No. 9, Everything I Know About Love, Brassic and more choosing to film there in recent years.
Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader Stockport Council, said:
“It was brilliant to welcome the House of Guinness production team to Stockport. Seeing the Underbanks step back in time to the 1800s showed just how unique our town centre is as a filming location. The team brought real energy and excitement, and local businesses played a big part in making the shoot such a success.
We’re proud that Stockport has become one of the region’s most popular filming destinations. With our diverse mix of heritage buildings, distinctive architecture, and vibrant street scenes, we love working with productions to help bring stories to life. Our highways, parking, and town centre teams are always flexible and welcoming to national and international productions. That support helps make shoots of this scale run smoothly and with minimal disruption to residents and businesses in the heart of our town centre.”

Manchester
Manchester is a hugely popular filming choice to double New York, with Captain America: The First Avenger dressing Dale Street as 1940s Brooklyn; season 4 of The Crown using multiple streets to double the city during Princess Diana’s visit in the 1980s; and Jared Leto’s Morbuis dressing the Northern Quarter as New York too.
For House of Guinness, cast and crew arrived in the heart of the Northern Quarter, filming in Lever Street and Back Piccadilly – with further locations Heaton Hall and Ancoats used too.
Filming was supported by Screen Manchester, who support productions filming on location within the city.

Liverpool
Multiple iconic locations in Liverpool were used to build the House of Guinness world, including the outstanding St George’s Hall (which recently doubled as Gotham in Matt Reeves’ The Batman), Collingwood Docks, Tobacco Warehouse and Stanley Docks.
Across the city region, Liverpool Film Office are on hand to facilitate filming, with 35+ years of experience in production. Find out more about Liverpool Film Office here.

Broughton Hall Estate, North Yorkshire
Nestled just outside of Skipton in North Yorkshire, Broughton Hall Estate is a Georgian country house sitting in 3,000 acres of landscaped grounds. This beautiful location has been used in All Creatures Great and Small and plays a key role in House of Guinness too.
Across Yorkshire, Screen Yorkshire are on hand to support filming – find out more about Screen Yorkshire here.
